Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A large and impressive, mold-made pottery vessel in the form of sea lion head with a countenance that expresses oodles of personality. Finely painted with a bichrome color palette of red and cream hues, the well-modeled face presents bold features including large, almond-shaped eyes with dynamic diagonal striations above and below them perhaps representing lashes or character lines to connote emotion, and a prominent muzzle comprised of a protruding nose with partially pierced nostrils and most amusingly, a partially opened mouth revealing sharp teeth as well as the tasty fish he just caught. This visage is capped by a stirrup and slightly flaring cylindrical spout. A fantastic example demonstrating the Moche's penchant for reflecting the natural world observed in the wild in their ceramics. Size: 6.75" L x 5" W x 9.375" H (17.1 cm x 12.7 cm x 23.8 cm)
