Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque, ca. 500 CE. A painstakingly detailed standing terracotta figure depicting a proud shaman dressed in ceremonial garments including a magnificent crescent-shaped headdress with and attached vessel behind and long, elaborate ornaments suspended from it and covering his ears, suspended from his lip an ornate labret that falls to his waist, and vestments with meticulously incised and appliqued detailing, all showing ample pigment remains of green, red, and yellow hues. Upon his face he wears a mask that presents an intimidating visage comprised of bulging eyes, an animorphic snout, and an open mouth revealing gnashing teeth. In his hands he holds a pair of implements, perhaps sacred offerings or percussive instruments. Given his elaborate costume, mask, and accoutrements, the figure most likely represents a shaman participating in a ceremonial ritual or dance. The Jama Coaque culture is named for two towns in the Manabi Province, in coastal central Ecuador. Although their pottery is similar to nearby cultures, it is often more richly clothed and elaborately adorned; this probably reflects actual traditions. The articles that this figure wears may signify an allegiance to a certain group of people or a particular rank or role in the society; this would have been clear to members of the Jama Coaque, but is a mystery to us today. Size: 4" W x 6.125" H (10.2 cm x 15.6 cm)
