Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A very fine two-part vessel used to store soaps and scented perfumes, with a remarkably thin-walled body, twin handles, and a concave raised foot, created in a pottery workshop in the Apulia region of southern Italy where potters were known for introducing additional pigments to the red-figure painting technique. The elaborate decorative program adorns the lid of this vessel and is comprised of a rosette on the knob, followed by three registers on the lid surface, featuring from top to bottom: zigzag, berried rolling vine, and wave motifs - and zigzags on the band around the base of the lid - all skillfully executed via the red-figure technique with added fugitive white and yellow pigments. Size: 5.5" W x 4.125" H (14 cm x 10.5 cm)

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA acquired between 1965 and 1980
