Description:

South America, Peru, dated 1746 CE. Remarkable wooden inkwell probably made and used in Lima during the middle of the 18th century. Made in 3 sections with wooden plank to which a squared wooden housing has been attached and atop this is a domed lid for a compartment holding ink. Decorated metal brackets at each corner and circular ring around base of domed lid. Each area is liberally decorated in incised designs and 3 panels of the housing carved with "Lima, Peru and 1746." What makes this date so significant is that this happens to be the year Lima was hit by a devastating 8.8 to 9.0 earthquake/tsunami that was said to have demolished as much as 70% of all buildings and killing thousands of residents. Size: 7.125" L x 7.125" W x 4.25" H (18.1 cm x 18.1 cm x 10.8 cm)
