Ancient Near East, Babylon, ca. 800 BCE. This is a rounded, carved ivory object depicting the skull-like head of Pazuzu (Fazuzu or Pazuza) from Assyrian and Babylonian mythology. The head has grotesque features - wide eyes that take up the entire forehead, sharp teeth clenched with a tongue sticking out - and a carved loop at the top for suspension. Pazuzu was the king of the demons of the wind, and represented the southwestern wind, the bearer of storms, drought, famine, and locusts. Babylonian ivory objects could have come from either African or Asian elephants, but researchers have theorized the latter due to cultural ties with the Harappan Empire in India and Pakistan. Ivory objects are mentioned in economic texts known from Ur, such as in the dowry of a Marduk priestess. Size: 1.6" W x 2.45" H (4.1 cm x 6.2 cm)
Bidders should be aware of the changing laws regarding commercialization of ivory and other product containing endangered species both on the Federal and State levels. This lot will be accompanied by a signed affidavit from the client that this object was in the United States prior to January 18, 1990, and is to the best of their knowledge and ability made prior to February 26, 1976 in accordance with Federal law. Ivory cannot be shipped out of the United States or to New York or New Jersey, and will not be shipped to California after June 30, 2016.
