Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, Xenon style, ca. 4th century BCE. A blackware plate on a raised foot decorated in the Xenon style with added pink hued pigments delineating a comprehensive program comprised of an outer band of laurel leaves, next a register featuring a vine-like scroll motif, and finally in the center an abstract flower with many petals radiating from an abstract stigma delineated via an "X" with circles inhabiting the quadrants. Size: 8.25" W x 1.625" H (21 cm x 4.1 cm)

So-called Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery that was named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219, 1) inscribed with the name "XENON" and is distinguished by its added matte reddish decoration over black glaze. Interestingly, miniature vases and vessels, perhaps intended as votives or toys, are particularly prevalent among Xenon pottery.
