Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Tabasco, ca. 400 to 900 cue. This lively hand built vessel in the form of a human head features an expressive wart-covered face. The Maya were preoccupied with health, and medicine was a blend of religion and science practiced by priests who inherited their position and received extensive education. The ancient Maya perceived health as balance; whereas illness and disease were understood as imbalance. The individual depicted on this vessel is clearly suffering from a skin condition. Perhaps this vessel was intended to administer herbal remedy to cure his ills. 4-1/4"H x 4-1/2"W x 5"D Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
