Description:

Africa, Northeast Nigeria, Katsina, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. An expressive, terracotta modeled head from the Katsina culture of ancient Nigeria that characteristic traits of Katsina figural sculpture such as the oval shaped face, the half-closed eyes, short nose, plaited coiffure, and jutting chin. The Katsina aesthetic shares affinities with the abstract stylings of their Nok contemporaries, and indeed many Katsina pieces were created in the same general area as the Nok. This example is somewhat unusual in that the slip-finished surface still retains its smoothness. Many examples by contrast have eroded to a more grainy surface. A wonderful example from this sophisticated ancient African culture. Size: 4.25" L x 3.5" W x 7" H (10.8 cm x 8.9 cm x 17.8 cm)
