Description:

Ancient Near East, Northern Syria, Syro-Hittite, ca. 3rd millennium BCE. A hand-built pottery female fertility idol, likely created to represent the goddess Astarte, with a characteristically columnar-form body, arms held to chest, an applied necklace/collar, and an almost birdlike visage presenting a prominent protruding nose, discoid eyes with delineated pupils, all topped by a curly coiffure. The design of the eyes was used throughout the ancient Near East to reflect the idea that eyes must be wide and attentive to show religious devotion. Size: 2.05" W x 6" H (5.2 cm x 15.2 cm); 6.5" H (16.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities; exhibited on February 23, 1999, at Saint Peter’s College, New Jersey, Department of Fine Art, by Mr. Oscar Magnan, Director of Art Gallery
