Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lulua Culture, ca. Pre-1945 CE. A rare wooden mask adorned with intricate raised motifs, showcasing geometric patterns inspired by the ancient tradition of beautifying the skin through scarification. While the specific purpose or symbolism of masks like this remains uncertain due to their rarity, they are typically associated with ritual practices, often meant to repel malevolent forces. The rim of the mask is pierced, likely to attach raffia tassels or securing to the wearer. Researchers at the University of Iowa Museum of Art have suggested that similar masks may have been used in circumcision rites (see accession number: X1986.510). This piece, reportedly collected by Christian missionaries and brought to the United States in 1945, displays a rich patina and beautifully exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of the Lulua people. Size: 6.5" L x 6" W x 10.75" H (16.5 cm x 15.2 cm x 27.3 cm)
