Central Asia, India, Khajuraho temple site, ca. 950 to 1050 CE. A carved stone sculptural fragment from the Khajuraho monuments depicting a section of a male figure in profile, finely coiffed with a mustache and goattee and wearing an armband and strap across his shoulder, formerly displayed in the Denver Art Museum in the 1960's. The Khajurajo temples of the Chandela dynasty were erected together, though dedicated to two religions, Hinduism and Jainism. These temples were decorated with an elaborate sculptural program replete with intricate details, symbolism, and styistic expressiveness. Of the temples that have survived, six are dedicated to Shiva and his consorts, eight to Vishnu and his associates, one to Ganesha, one to the Sun God, and three to Jain Tirthanks. Even in situ, it is sometimes difficult to identify specific deities or figures with confidence as these are ruins with insufficient evidence. While these temples are most famous for their erotic sculpture, explicit sexual subjects amount to less than 10% of their iconographic programs as the sculptures address many aspects of religion and human life.
