Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th to 20th Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 1069 BCE. A wonderful pottery jarlet presenting an ovoid body adorned with the relief image of 2 figures or objects on a boat on each side. A pair of bags or sacks hang down from each bow of the long, curved ship, while the bottom of the jar features a pattern of lotus petals. The top of the jar displays a flared spout and a petite lug handle. Because pots decorated with boat scenes have been found almost exclusively in burial contexts, they may have served a ritual function, as processions by boat would play an important role in funerary iconography throughout Egyptian history. In later periods, they often represent the journey of the deceased to the afterlife. Size: 1.5" Diameter x 2.6" H (3.8 cm x 6.6 cm)
