Egypt, Late Period, ca. 700 to 30 BCE. A miniature faience amulet depicting the striding lion-headed goddess Sekhmet with hands held to her sides, donning a tightly fitted garment, of saturated turquoise color, with a loop hole atop for suspension. This piece was exhibited at San Diego Museum of Man, CA, in 1968. According to Carol Andrews, Egyptologist at the British Museum for over 28 years who played an integral role in the Tuthankhamen exhibition held there in 1972, Sekhmet was the fierce goddess of the Memphite area who symbolizes the burning heat of the sun as well as the sun's watchful eye over Egypt's enemies. Provenance: ex-Collection of Goddard Dubois, acquired on Mr. Dubois's trips to Egypt between 1900 and 1907. Exhibited at the San Diego Museum of Man, CA, 1968.
