Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Colorado or New Mexico, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), Mesa Verde type, ca. 1100 to 1300 CE. A wonderfully formed ceramic pitcher with stylized geometric motifs in the black-on-white Mesa Verde type synonymous with this region. The body widens dramatically near the base to form a wide lower body with a short shoulder. Above is a tapering neck that terminates in a thin, unpronounced rim. A thick strap handle is on one side. This vessel was made by hand coiling pottery, smoothing it, and baking it in an open-air fire. The motifs may represent families or clans, but since no two vessels from this culture look identical, they may also reflect the personal preferences of the women who made them. Size: 6.25" W x 7.25" H (15.9 cm x 18.4 cm)
