Europe, Germany, ca. 15th century CE. A remarkable, hand-carved sculpture of Jesus in the moment known as "Ecce Homo;" a dramatic in the passion of Christ when Pontius Pilate presents a scourged and bound Christ to the hostile crowd shortly before his Crucifixion. Depicted nude, save for a loin cloth, the emaciated figure is shown kneeling as he gazes down and to his right. Long tresses of hair fall onto his shoulders and frame his gaunt visage, which consists of naturalistic eyes beneath an arched brow, closed lips, and a forked beard. He holds both arms before him, each bent at the elbow and hands in front of his chest, presumably bound together. Aside from the loincloth, Christ is depicted with as much of his suffering body as is possible with his skeletal physique and somber countenance. Liberal remains of white, peach, brown, and gold pigments can be found throughout the piece. Size: 7.2" W x 15.2" H (18.3 cm x 38.6 cm); 18.5" H (47 cm) on included custom stand.
