Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya, Late Period VI, Pataky style, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A charming pottery tripod vessel in the form of a coatimundi hand-painted in hues of black and orange on beige. The adorable animal bends its front legs support itself on the elbows, head resting on its forepaws, while its looped tail serves as the third tripod leg at the verso. Its stylized visage features coffee bean-shaped eyes surrounded by the coati's distinctive facial markings, a round nose, and a smiling mouth of sharp, gritted teeth, all crowned by a pair of perky ears. The tapering rim of the vessel is painted with a band of feline motifs followed by a strip of abstract, glyph-like designs, as a checkered pattern adorns the lower part of the animal. Size: 8" L x 7" W x 8.9" H (20.3 cm x 17.8 cm x 22.6 cm)

This piece is traditional of the Pataky style. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art: "The Pataky style excels in animal portrayals that combine a modeled head with a flat vessel chamber that doubles as the animal's body. It may be important that many of these animals strike human poses; creatures that combine the human and animal often have mythic import."
