Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima culture, Comala style. ca. 100 BCE - 250 CE. This rare figure depicts a shaman, adorned in elaborate regalia on one side and a night creature on the other. The figures come together with magnificent head ornaments/helmets. The shaman's helmet features a textured visor with expressive form and pronounced extension and elaborately detailed chin strap. His face is delineated painstakingly with fine details including coffee bean eyes and elaborate face paint. Note how his eyes are closed as he is undergoing this transformation to become the night creature on the backside.
