Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A tall, gorgeous, blown glass jar, near-translucent and pale blue, with a long, amphora-like form, a corseted neck with a lip, and a slightly flared mouth with a rolled rim. Two applied glass handles that rise from the shoulder to the middle of the neck contribute to its amphora-like look. After the invention of glass blowing in the middle of the 1st century BCE in the Roman province of Syria, the glass industry was forever transformed. An industry sprang up throughout the Roman world for mass producing glass jars, tableware, and larger storage containers, replacing pottery goods. Despite the scale of the production, jars like this one show significant variations in the shape and color of the glass, which makes each piece almost unique. The skill of the artisan who made the piece is clear from its symmetrical form and delicacy. Amazing that this piece has survived for nearly 2000 years intact! Size: 1.9" W x 9.7" H (4.8 cm x 24.6 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.
