Description:

Europe, possibly France, Medieval to Early Renaissance, ca. 13th to 16th century CE. Finely carved from bovine bone, a cylindrical section depicting wonderful religious iconography. On one side is an archangel, likely Saint Michael, standing and facing front with bold facial features, holding a staff with a Cross finial in his right hand and a Global crucifer in his left hand. On the opposite side is the archangel St. George wielding a sword and shield. Between the figures are decorative panels featuring large central images of flora flanked by striated and cross-hatched borders. Above and below the scenes, encircling the entire vessel are incised horizontal bands. A very special piece of religious art! Size: 1.25" W x 2.2" H (3.2 cm x 5.6 cm)
