Description:

Etruria, northern Italy, Etrusco-Corinthian, ca. 630 to 540 BCE. A near-miniature aryballos of an elegant form with an inverted piriform body, a tubular neck, and a flat rim with a single strap handle. The vase is painted via the black-figure technique with a decorative program that consists of a pair of energetic running hounds in profile adorning the shoulder, four pairs of whimsical squiggly motifs equidistantly placed lower on the body, striations of varying thickness on the body, dots and striations on the rim, and a single squiggle on the handle. Lucite stand. Size: 4.125" H (10.5 cm); 4.375" H (11.1 cm) including stand

The hounds adorning this piece recall one of the most famous representations of dogs in antiquity - the Roman mosaic from Pompeii of a dog on a chain that warns, "CAVE CANEM" - Beware of Dog! Of course, these dogs look like a happier, friendlier version, and remind us of the humanity of the Romans, who are well documented as loving their dogs.

The Orientalizing period prompted trade relations between Etruria, Greece, and the Near East, leading to various influences on Etruscan art. Etrusco-Corinthian was a universal Etruscan style of pottery that both imitated and adapted the Corinthian style (typically in the black-figure technique) between 630 and about 540 BCE Its major centers of production were located at Vulci, Caere, and Tarquinia.
