Classical World, Etruria, ca. 6th century CE. A very special SILVER ceremonial ladle with a round bowl and a long handle that curves downward near its upper end in the form of duck head with a broad bill and finely incised eyes and neck feathering. At its lower end is an incised flower. The ladle - a simpulum or simpuvium - was used to make libations and to taste wines and liquors that were poured on the heads of sacrificial victims. It was also more generally just a utensil, shown in banqueting scenes on Greek and Italian vases aiding in the distribution of wine into cups. Size: 11" H (27.9 cm); 12.75" H (32.4 cm) on included custom stand. Weight: 53.3 grams. Silver quality: 95%.

  • Condition: A few minute cracks/losses to the rim of the bowl. Tiny nicks to edges of handle. Normal indentations to the form, some due to age, but some created when the piece was made (via hammering).
