Ancient Mediterranean, central Italy, Etruria, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE; Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A delightful Etruscan rock crystal scaraboid featuring a satyr riding a goat, set in a Neoclassical swivel ring of over 17 karat gold. Facing right, the goat strides forward toward a stalk of wheat, his head displaying a short beard and sweeping, arched horns that extend back to the rider, who boisterously wields a spear and tosses his head back in raucous laughter. A corded border surrounds the scene, while the stone's periphery is intricately carved with a cross-hatching pattern. The ovoid gem is set in a bifurcated gold ring band and flanked by coils of gold.
