Description:

Classical World, Italy, Etruria, ca. 5th century BCE. A fine Etruscan krater with hoplites (foot soldiers) that was probably made in the ancient city of Clusium (modern day Chiusi), the surface painted with a technique that emulates red-figure pottery by using a red slip overpainted / superposed (Italian: sovraddipinta) on top of the black ground. The krater is a rather large inverted ceramic bell shape with twin handles under the rim and used in the symposium as a wine and water mixing vessel. The obverse is decorated with the two helmeted but nude warriors holding spears and shields. The bird between them is a token of victory rather than ill-omened, as it flies toward the presumed winner. Winged Nike, wearing a peplos, approaches to drape a celebratory woven band fillet over the victor. The reverse has two draped standing figures. Both scenes are on a key pattern ground line and there are laurel leaves in a band under the rim. Size: 16" Diameter x 14" H (40.6 cm x 35.6 cm)
