Description:

Etruria, central Italy, Genucilia Group, ca. 600 to 400 BCE. A charming bi-chrome pottery plate on a pedestal foot, decorated with a stylized-star/wave motif on a wide flat rim around a shallow tondo. The tondo is painted in black pigment depicting a young woman in profile; wearing a beaded headdress- a sakkos or a kekrapholos. The underside of the dish is painted with two bands of black above the pedestal. The Genucilia pottery type derives its name from a Faliscan or Latin lady named Poplia Genucilia, who was the owner of a similar plate which was inscribed with her name. A beautiful example of the type with a sensitively rendered face! Size: 5.66" W x 2.08" H (14.4 cm x 5.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
