Ancient Italy, Tuscany region, Etruria, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE; Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A remarkable Etruscan eye agate scarab carved with the image of a hand and mounted in a Neoclassical gold pendant to be wearable. Boasting rich hues of mocha, espresso, and vanilla, the scarab displays minimalist features with delineated legs and a petite head. On the underside, the hand presents a large palm with short fingers and a lengthy thumb. Size of scarab: 0.5" L x 0.4" W x 0.3" H (1.3 cm x 1 cm x 0.8 cm); of intaglio: 0.8" L x 0.6" W (2 cm x 1.5 cm); gold quality: 68% (over 16 karats); weight: 3.1 grams
