Description:

Italy, 4th century BCE. Pottery vessel with high looping handles, a low pedestal foot, and incised decoration at the base. Produced in central Italy by the Etruscan culture, bucchero is a class of ceramics, the name deriving from the Latin poculum via the Spanish bucaro or the Portuguese pucaro - meaning drinking vessel. Distinguished by its black, glossy surface attained via a special reduction firing process in which the piece was starved of oxygen in the kiln, thereby changing the clay's color from red to black. After firing, the artisans diligently burnished the surface to attain a lustrous, polished surface. A fine example of the national pottery of ancient Etruria! Size: 4 1/4"H x 6-1/2" from handle to handle. Provenance: Ex-Private Seattle, WA collection formed in the 1970's.
