Description:

Classical World, Northern Italy, Etruscan culture, ca. 7th to 6th century BCE. A wonderful wheel-thrown blackware pottery chalice of a fine form meant to be deposited into a grave as a funerary offering. The chalice is defined by a flared foot, a tapered stem with a central carination, a broad base, and tall walls incised with two pairs of concentric striations. The thin rim is embellished with six mastoid protrusions, and six similar protrusions on the walls create a zigzagging presentation along the exterior. Size: 6.1" W x 6.1" H (15.5 cm x 15.5 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces, with restoration along some areas of walls and rim, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and minor nicks to foot, stem, walls, and basin, with light fading to areas of original color, and light encrustations. Great remains of original black color throughout.
