Description:

Classical World, Central Italy, Etruria, early 6th century BCE. A beautifully-formed pottery oinochoe, or pouring vessel, with a strap handle joining rim to shoulder and a slightly-pulled rim. The voluminous, apple-shaped body is supported by a round, flat foot. Bucchero is a specifically-Etruscan technique for firing pottery which results in a smooth, shiny black finish. This type of jug may have been specifically made to be buried with offerings, as was often the case for such fine Etruscan pottery. Faint silvery iridescence coats the exterior of this wonderful example. Size: 5.25" H (13.3 cm).

This oinochoe almost certainly came from a funerary context, placed in an opulent Etruscan tomb as an offering. However, it was probably placed there because similar - or maybe even the same - vessels were used in life by the people of Etruria; items placed in the tomb were meant to be a link between the world of the living and the dead, and to help furnish a symbolic domestic space for the deceased. Therefore, it seems likely that chalices like this one were also used in everyday life for serving and drinking wine or other beverages.
