Description:

Classical World, Etruria, central Italy, ca. 600 to 400 BCE. A pretty example of a bronze wine strainer. It has a long, flat handle with incised, abstract linear motifs. At the end of the handle is a hook that resembles the head of a duck or goose, perhaps for suspending the item when it was being stored. The bowl is shallow, with a thin rim that projects slightly over the edge of the bowl. A swirling, round pattern of tiny perforations in the center of the bowl is the functional part of this elegant utensil. These items were used to filter out the sediment when serving wine, a crucial tool, especially for ancient methods of wine making. Size: 4.6" W x 10.1" H (11.7 cm x 25.7 cm)
