Description:

Classical World, Etruria, central Italy, ca. 600 to 400 BCE. A stunningly-aged cast bronze wine strainer with a deep blue-green patina over most of its surface. It has a long handle made from a curved and regularly crimped bronze wire on one end and a shorter handle made from a loop of bronze wire on the other. The bowl is shallow aside from its center, with a thin rim that projects slightly over the edge of the bowl. A deep secondary bowl in the center of the main bowl has its base punctured by a swirling, sun-like pattern of tiny perforations, forming the functional part of this gorgeous utensil. These items were used to filter out the sediment when serving wine, a crucial tool, especially for ancient methods of wine making. Size: 5" W x 11.6" H (12.7 cm x 29.5 cm); 13.8" H (35.1 cm) on included custom stand.
