Description:

Classical World, Etruria, ca. late 4th to 3rd century CE. A wonderfully preserved bronze handle cast at each terminal with a face and head of Silenus, the tutor/follower of Dionysus, always depicted as an older man with a large, full beard. Each face has a wonderful long, wavy beard, large eyes, a heavy brow, and faun-like projecting ears. The curved part of the handle between them is elegant, with three equal-width facets. Although Dionysus and his followers like Silenus appear on classical Greek pottery - usually on vessels for wine - they first became really popular in the Hellenistic period, when many of the conventions of portraying them became codified. Size: 1" W x 6.25" H (2.5 cm x 15.9 cm); 3.15" H (8 cm) on included custom stand.
