Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, Amarro (Oromo) peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large shield made from the hide of either a hippopotamus or buffalo. The circular shield has a flared exterior rim and raised lumps, the verso once contained a handle to grip. Horse-riding warriors of the Amarro people would wield lengthy spears while holding these shields for protection against opposing forces. Due to trading with neighboring groups, similar shields are used by several cultures in the region. Craftsman would place the cut hide on a concave surface and oil the hide as it was pounded and stretched, then it was dried. Size: 24.75" |Diameter (62.9 cm)
