Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 900 to 1250 CE. Art imitates life in this special ancient Peruvian terracotta figural vessel depicting an amorous couple. The man and woman are engaged in an embrace with intertwined legs, and they are about to kiss. In addition to capturing this sensual act, the sculptor skillfully rendered their visages with almond-shaped eyes, protruding noses, subtly delineated lips, well-contoured facial planes, and distinct coiffures - the male's shoulder-length hair topped by a band or caplike hat, the woman's incised straight locks falling past her shoulders. Finally, a stirrup spout rises behind the male figure's head. Quite a saucy vessel indeed! Size: 6.125" L x 5.375" W x 7" H (15.6 cm x 13.7 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Jack Bregman collection, acquired in the early 1970s, then by descent to current owner
