Description:

USA, North Dakota, Eocene to Oligocene, ca. 55 million to 23 million years ago. A fragment of the skull of a small oreodont, a fascinating extinct group of mammalian herbivores unlike any we know of today. These animals were artiodactyls, like modern pigs, camcels, deer, and sheep. However, the structures of the oreodont skeleton and teeth were completely different from any of those living animals. This example has several teeth visible as well as the eye sockets and gives a good idea of the size of this animal, which was probably comparable to a modern sheep. Oreodont fossils are most known from the Brule Formation of the Dakotas, preserved in river deposits that developed in a savannah-like environment 34 million years ago. Size: 2.5" L x 4.25" W x 3.5" H (6.4 cm x 10.8 cm x 8.9 cm)
