Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A very sizeable wheel-thrown pottery lekanis, its elegant form with a similarly-shaped lid and lower body making for a pleasing symmetrical presentation. Decorated via the red-figure technique, the lid presents a bust of a youthful, clean-shaven male - perhaps Apollo - with delicate features and a curly red coiffure surrounded by scrolling blooming tendrils on one side, a stylized palmette on the other, pinwheel-like radiating rays atop the finial, and a band of wave motifs adorning the profile edge of the lid. Details are also highlighted/delineated in fugitive white pigment. The wide body is supported by a protruding concave foot and presents a pair of applied horizontal loop handles with wing-like appliques at each end, a delineated lip, and a fretted upper border. An outstanding example! Size: 15" W x 11" H (38.1 cm x 27.9 cm)
