Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Daunia, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A huge, and I mean huge, pottery krater of an unusual form with a large rounded body with a broad funnel rim, twin handles, and two fascinating additional handles modeled to resemble upraised human hands emerging from the shoulder, all adorned with geometric, floral, and scrolliate motifs in hues of black on a creamy beige ground. As early as the 6th century BCE, Daunia was an extremely wealthy region as is evidenced by the rich grave goods from the urban centers of Canosa, Arpi, and Salapia among others. Daunian pottery while somewhat more rustic compared to black glazed and red figure South Italic Greek pottery is characterized by voluminous rounded forms with geometric and linear patterns in earthen tones as we see in this intriguing example. Size: 15.25" in diameter x 11.25" H (38.7 cm x 28.6 cm).
