Description:

Oceania/Polynesia, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 1890 CE. A massive koa wood bowl with a deep interior, a rounded base, and steep walls that lead to a slightly in-turned rim. Hawaii is renowned for its finely carved vessels, many of which are made of koa wood - its grain is relatively soft and easy to cut. This example has a rich, smooth patina on its exterior, giving it a warm glow. Two old repairs also made of koa wood plugs carefully inserted into the surface blend seamlessly into one side of the bowl. Size: 23.75" W x 10" H (60.3 cm x 25.4 cm)
