Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. An enormous ladder used to enter dwellings built on stilts, hand-carved from a single hefty piece of caramel-hued hard wood. The ladder has a tall rectangular form, seven integral steps which are carved into the obverse side, and a single notch atop the verso for securing to the side of a structure. The steps exhibit an incredibly smooth texture from countless uses, and the entire ladder boasts superb patina with a gorgeous luster. A beautiful example from Nepal! Custom museum-quality display stand included (not shown). Size: 9.1" W x 87.3" H (23.1 cm x 221.7 cm).

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany
