Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Lombok, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A cylindrical medicine container with an anthropomorphic stopper comprised of wood, bamboo, and rattan. The central portion of the container, made from a large section of bamboo, is engraved with a grid containing various characters and symbols. Above and below this are bands of tightly wound rattan with a twisted loop emerging from the upper band. The carved wood stopper, which fits snugly into the container and is removable, features a seated female figure with an elongated head, finely carved facial features, and long curvilinear ears - adorned with organic deep black-brown pigment. She dons a pointed headress and pectoral, and sits with her hands placed just beneath her upraised knees. A beautiful piece from Indonesia. Size: 2.75" in diameter x 17.125" H (7 cm x 43.5 cm)
