Description:

Western Europe, England, Post Medieval Period, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. An exquisite and dainty guilloche gold fob seal with a jasper intaglio showing a crest of a mythical wyvern. The 77.19% gold (equivalent to 18K+) and guilloche enamel technique first worked the metal on an engine-turned lathe to form a swirling concentric pattern onto the metal, before the turquoise glass was applied over the surface. Fob seals were worn on watch fobs as accessories for gentlemen - they were often purely decorative, but the more personalized, such as this example with a crest, were used to sign documents. We can be certain that this was worn as a suspended fob, as it is the reverse side of the seal matrix that would have been in view; hence the enameled flower decoration! The wyvern is a 2-legged dragon, a very important and popular symbol in English heraldry, and a popular mascot for sport teams today! Size: 0.5" L x 0.375" W x 0.75" H (1.3 cm x 1 cm x 1.9 cm); gold quality: 77.19% (equivalent to 18K+); weight: 2.8 grams
