Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. In a word - BREATHTAKING! This glass vessel presents a curvaceous form with a teardrop shaped voluminous body rising to a tall, slender cylindrical neck that flares to a rolled rim. Its coloration is most rare - opaque white, a color that Pliny the Elder hailed as rivaling the "appearance of fluor-spar" - a beautiful crystallized stone that can manifest as white. Size: 2.82" W x 4.87" H (7.17 cm x 12.37 cm)

Pliny the Elder paid homage to the beauty of the many hues created in hand-blown glass, including white glass, "There is, furthermore, opaque white glass and others that reproduce the appearance of fluor-spar, blue sapphires or lapis lazuli, and, indeed, glass exists in any color . . . ." (Pliny, Natural History XXXVI.198 from "Solid Liquid" catalogue, Fortuna Fine Arts, New York, 1999, p. 64.)
