Central Europe, Proto-Celtic Urnfield Culture, ca. 1000 BCE. An elegant socketed bronze axe head with a short, curved blade and slight decorative flare to the shape of the socket. Central Europeans at this time, inspired by the Mycenean Greeks, wore bronze body armor and helmets and carried bronze shields and weapons. An axe head like this would have been attached to a wooden handle, wrapped tightly with leather or sinews to hold it in place. Comes with custom stand. Size: 4" L x 1.2" W x 1.55" H (10.2 cm x 3 cm x 3.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
