Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An elegant and large bronze "crossbow" fibula or brooch used to fasten a cloak of a Roman soldier and citizen. It is cruciform, with round bosses on the terminals at top and sides, and a flat tailpiece with deeply incised motifs at either end of the central ridge. The original pin and fastening shaft are still intact as well. The surface is beautifully gilded. Larger than most examples we see. Size: 2.55" W x 4.45" H (6.5 cm x 11.3 cm)

  • Condition: Small crack in bronze on back of latch, otherwise in excellent condition, with much of the gilding remaining and a dark patina on the ungilded surfaces. Nice detail visible. Light encrustation on surface and wear commensurate with age. Pin is frozen in place.
