Description:

Aegean/Eastern Mediterranean, Corinth, ca. 6th century BCE. A beautifully decorated oinochoe (oenochoe) or wine pouring vessel, its form comprised of a drum-shaped body, rounded shoulders leading to a tubular neck, and a trefoil spout joined via a high strap handle to the shoulder all upon a flat base. Corinthian potters invented these flat bottomed oinochoe forms and the style spread throughout the area by overseas trade. The painted decorative program is extensive, featuring a lovely pattern of wide and narrow striations around the body and a band of frets adorning the shoulder, all in black and dark red over a buff terracotta ground. Size: 4.125" in diameter x 6.875" H (10.5 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Eugene Raymond collection, Massachusetts, USA
