Description:

East Greek or Lydian, ca. 7th century BCE. An elegant, remarkably constructed 99% pure silver oinochoe, a vessel for pouring wine. This fine offering was likely made for giving libations at a grave or altar. The body is an inverted piriform shape, with a long mouth and a thin handle. It stands on a diminutive, flaring foot. The silver is remarkably thin, demonstrating the skill of the smith who made it, so that the vessel is much lighter than it appears. Although the oinochoe form seems to have originated in Greece, it spread rapidly through trade and conquest, and silver vessels like this one have been found in modern day eastern Europe, at the Lydian capital of Sardis, and along the Silk Road. Size: 3.9" W x 5.25" H (9.9 cm x 13.3 cm); 99% pure; total weight: 111.3 grams

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection, acquired at Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, USA; ex-Madame Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, acquired in the 1960s
