Description:

Northwest Africa, Mali, Fulani culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. An exquisite pair of gilt brass earrings with a fin spiral / twist, crafted through a meticulous hand-hammering process. Gold earrings were traditionally worn daily rather than reserved for special occasions since Fulani women stored their wealth in the form of jewelry. Small suspension loops were welded to the earrings in recent times in order to add the ear hooks, but originally the thick wire would have had a slit to pass through the earlobe. These are wearable and very elegant! Size with hooks: 2.75" L x 1.5" W (7 cm x 3.8 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand; weight: 14.9 grams
