Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A finely-wrought, gilded bronze fibula in the crossbow style. The cast bronze has fine details, including horizontal ridges projecting from the shaft of the brooch that give it a floral appearance - as if vines are creeping up the sides. The broad curve has its sides decorated with faintly incised swirling geometric motifs, each of these beautifully gilded. The top of the crossbow has a series of ridges as well. The termini of the cruciform element are rounded projections. An example of excellent craftsmanship that has survived the years very well. Size: 1.95" W x 3.25" H (5 cm x 8.3 cm)
