Description:

Central Asia, Turkmenistan / Afghanistan, Turkmen (Turkoman) culture, ca. late 20th century CE. A child's tunic made from cotton panels patched together with extensive brass, silver, gilt-brass, and beaded ornaments covering the surface of both sides. A beaded netting with dangling cowrie shells is also laid over the cloth with brass appliques sewn on top. There are coins from the 1960s, 1970s, and late 1980s, as well as plastic and shell buttons, and string tassels. Most cabochons inlaid in the brass pendants are glass or enamel, but there are a few lapis stones. Most metal pieces are brass, but a few bells tested about 30% silver, and a brass triangular pendant is gilt with 30% gold! The talismans on these ornate tunics protected the child against the evil eye and misfortune. Size: 19" L x 20" W (48.3 cm x 50.8 cm); silver quality: 27% to 38%; gold quality: 30% (equivalent to 7K+)
