Description:

Pre-Columbian, ca. 250 to 1521 CE. This is a beautiful group of 8 decorated baked clay spindle whorls, or malacates as they are known in both Spanish and Nahuatl. They range in color from cream to red to black. Spindle whorls are perforated disks that were used in the production of spun fiber, and as a result are the most common evidence for the production of textiles in pre-Columbian Latin America, a major activity for women in these societies. This group is a steal at this price if you enjoy artifacts that are aesthetically pleasing, have interesting stories behind them, and are a little bit out of the ordinary! Size of largest: 2-1/2" in diameter and 1" H (6-1/2 cm x 2-1/2 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.
