Egypt, Third Intermediate Period to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved wooden ushabti with a painted hieroglyph inscription adorning the front, black-painted tripartite wig, and facial features against a russet red complexion, as well as nice traces of bright blue pigment across the torso. The figure is mummiform, and stands ready to work in the fields of Osiris! Size: 8" L x 2.5" W (20.3 cm x 6.4 cm) Size: 8.125" L (20.6 cm); 8.875" H (22.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Ushabti were placed in tombs as grave goods, created to do manual labor for the deceased in the afterlife. As a result, they are frequently depicted with arms crossed, holding hoes and baskets. By the Third Intermediate Period, this practice had become so elaborate that some tombs contained one worker for every day of the year and thirty-six overseers, each responsible for ten laborers. Workers like this one are from that period of enormous proliferation, and are some of our best surviving insights into ancient Egyptian funerary practices.
